Recovering deleted and inaccessible data
Deleted files, a system that won’t boot, an unreadable memory card. I look at what the chances are and tell you straight, before I start anything.
If the drive is making unusual noises — clicking, grinding, squeaking — switch the computer off immediately and don’t turn it on again. Every power-on reduces the chance of recovery.
What I can do myself
I recover data from healthy media after deletion, formatting or file system damage. That covers most cases — an accidentally deleted folder, a system that stopped booting, or a camera card the computer refuses to read.
I always work from a copy, never directly from the original drive.
Where I stop and hand over
Mechanically damaged drives — ones where the electronics or the mechanics inside have failed — belong in a specialist laboratory with a clean room. I don’t do that kind of work and wouldn’t recommend anyone try it at home.
In that case I tell you what has happened, recommend a trusted laboratory and arrange the handover. The laboratory sets its own price, which is usually considerably higher than a normal repair.
Frequently asked questions
How much does recovery cost?
I give you the price after diagnostics, based on the scope. Without that it would be a guess, and with data I don’t do guesses.
What are the chances of getting the data back?
High for deleted files and a damaged system, provided nothing has been written to the drive since. With physically damaged media it can’t be estimated in advance. I never promise anything up front.
Will you see my files?
During recovery I only work with the files to the extent needed to check that they were recovered. I keep nothing and delete my copies after handover.
What should I do right now?
Stop using the device. Every further write to the drive reduces the chance that deleted data can be recovered. Switch it off and get in touch.
Tell me what happened
Tell me what device it is and what happened before the data disappeared. The sooner, the better the chances.
